Oh man. The NY Post is at it again. This time, they’re taking about how it’s an official policy stating that seat time should not be a reason for a student to fail a class.
This won’t come at a shock to anyone that has ever taught in the five boroughs. I just figured it was culture and/or unwritten policy that we have to academically dishonest. Ever since I became an official DOE employee in 2015, I have always been pressured to pass students that I shouldn’t have.
Many years the administration at my school sung the praises of our “Bootcamp”. We would essentially take the any student we failed, whatever the reason may be, and give them a chance to make up work. If any of those students showed up and completed ANY work at all, they could pass. Hell, they didn’t even have to complete the entire amount of work given. Just as long as they showed that they did “enough”, they could receive the coveted 65. I mean what kind of bullshit is that.
Whenever we had to give this bullshit, I refused to make it easy. If I had to play the game in order to keep my job**, then I was not going to go quietly into the night. I would absolutely BURY the kid in work. If they were able to miss the entire semester, they had to make up an entire semester’s worth of work. I don’t see anything wrong with it. There were some students that actually rose to the challenge and completed it.
What really tickles my balls is that the DOE has the testicular fortitude to actually write this shit down. In the right hands, this could decimate a number if careers. At least it should, but in 2019, I’m not so sure anymore. These administrators, superintendents and whoever else condoned this policy should be stripped of everything they’ve ever loved. This is one of the many reasons that our educational system is an absolute joke. We’re literally making it known that students can do whatever the fuck they want AND GET AWAY WITH IT.
This is the literal equivalent of cutting yourself and being surprised when you bleed. The person that came up with this gem of an idea should be beaten on national TV.
**They normally wouldn’t just outright fire you, they would just make your life a living hell and do one of two things. They would either rate you I effectively and then fire you, or they would bully you out of the building.
